Pinewind Farm: Breeder of Rare Silver and American Chinchilla Rabbits in New York State

welcometo the website of Pinewind Farm!  We invite you to step into a scenic setting in rural New York and let us show you life on the farm.  Situated in the hills of the western part of the state, we breed rare Silver and American Chinchilla rabbits, striving to produce healthy, show-quality animals with fine pet temperaments.

New York is something of a hot spot for the Silver rabbit, though they are rare throughout the country and recognized as being in a "threatened" state by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy.  Pinewind bunnies have held up in good competition against some of the nation's better breeders.  We currently raise only the black variety, though brown and fawn are also recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association.   The base color on adult rabbits is interspersed with bright white hairs.  This and the short, slick, dense fur lends a bright gleam to the whole animal. To learn more about this beautiful and historical breed of rabbit, and how it changes from black to silver, visit our Bucks and Does pages.  We have found the Silvers to be bright, curious, gentle and a delight to keep!

Our new addition, the American Chinchilla, is also a heritage breed and considered to be in the "critical" group by the ALBC.  The rare American Chinchilla is a larger rabbit, weighing about nine to eleven pounds as adults.  The are of a type and size to be an ideal commercial rabbit, but unlike other commercial breeds have a luscious coat of long, rollback fur.  Their coat blends slate, black and light pearl gray hairs in a striking fashion.  Blowing into the coat reveals concentric rings of color in the fur.  We are really enjoying the "Chins."  They have fun, friendly personalities.

We also raise registered Alpine and Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats.  You can view photos of the goats, gardens, and nature here on the farm in the gallery.  Feel free to contact us if you have questions, or are looking for rabbits for sale.  Not all the baby bunnies born make it on to the For Sale page, so let us know what you are looking for and we can try to help you get set up.  We would be happy to talk to you about goats, Silvers, or American Chinchillas!
